The car must be built from the Official Pinewood Derby Kit. Wheels and axles other than those provided in the kit are prohibited.

The car must have been built this scouting year. No “used” cars allowed.

Width shall not exceed 2-3/4 inches.

Length shall not exceed 7 inches. Height shall not exceed 8 inches.

Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces. The car may be hollowed out and built up to the maximum weight by the addition of wood or metal that is securely built into/onto the body. Loose and/or free-moving weights are prohibited.

Altering the shape of the wheel tread area beyond sanding the small molding stub off and polishing the tread area is prohibited. Axles may not be altered in anyway except for removing burrs and polishing.

Wheel bearings, washers, & bushings are not allowed.

Springs for suspension are not allowed.

The car must be free wheeling with no starting devices.

The front bumper of the car may be rounded or square. Cutting a wedge to go around the starting pin is prohibited.

The minimum clearance between the bottom of the car and the track surface shall be 3/8 inch so the car will clear the track’s center guide strip.

The wheelbase (distance between the front and rear axles) may not be altered from the kit measurement of 4-1/4 inches.

The minimum width between the wheels shall be 1-3/4 inches so the car will clear the track’s center guide strip.

Details such as steering wheel, driver, decals, etc. are permissible as long as these details do not make the car exceed the maximum length, width, or weight specifications.

Graphite or other powdered lubricant can be applied only once before the car enters the church. No additional graphiting or lubricating will be allowed inside the church or once racing begins.

Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee. Once it has passed inspection, the car will be placed on a table and will be removed only by the Cub Scout to race and then be returned to the table as soon as the race is over.

After passing inspection, the only person authorized to handle the car is the Scout. Major repairs may be assisted by a parent.

Repair time for loose wheels, etc. is 2 minutes. One repair allowed per car.

The race will be double elimination.

If a car jumps the track, the race will be repeated with the cars on the same lanes. A car jumping the track twice will be eliminated from the heat.

In the event of a tie, the heat will be run again on opposite lanes.

Cars must be registered on time, and may NOT be raced by anyone other than that scout. No stand-ins.

Missing a heat or racing in the wrong heat must be caught before the running of the next heat, else results stand. (ALL scouts need to listen for their names).

Although rare, any timely requests to resolve disputes will be settled by the Judges present. Any timely appeals of those decisions will be settled by Cubmaster Mark Palmer and Committee Chair John Scales.

The District asked our Pack to carry the Scouting for Food banner.

We had a fair turn out of scouts and parents. The junk yard racers were popular for the parade watchers. Parade watchers also applauded Matt as he did his “Santa Style” Boom-Chic-a-Boom cheer as the Pack marched down the Fort Mill parade route.

Friday December 4 update:

Our spot for the parade is 42. The parade will start at 11am. Please be in line by 10:30am. Keep in mind that the roads leading to downtown Ft Mill will be closed off about 30 minutes before the parade begins.

According to our spot last year, we will probably be close to the back of the cemetery or middle. Look for spot 42. Matt will be there with Westley.

The parade is scheduled to go on rain or shine. If it is down pouring, they will make a decision by 8am.

Pack 250 Families,

The Pack will participate in the Fort Mill Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 5th. Scouts will walk the parade route. Dens are encouraged to bring their junkyard racer and take turns pushing and steering with adult help. Families are encouraged to walk with us. You may bring strollers or wagons for younger siblings. The Webelos dens will carry the Pack, State and United States flags.

Scouts must have an adult with them at all times. Tiger cubs must have a parent with them. Den Leaders may not take responsibility for tiger cubs, except their own scout. We can not make any exceptions to the rule. This is a BSA rule.

The line up will start in the Unity Presbyterian Cemetery and weave to the street behind it. It will depend on the spot we are assigned as to the wait and when we need to assemble. When we have the spot number, I will send you out an email as to where to meet. Please plan on being around the area no later then 8:30am. The streets will close and make it difficult to get to our meeting spot if you arrive after that.

The parade will start in front of Unity Presbyterian, turn left on Main Street, turn right on 160 and end at the Park, Elijah Park. (Not certain of the name…)

A suggestion would be to pair up with another family or two and pack one car at the meeting spot. Park another car at the Park on your way into Fort Mill. After walking the parade, your scout may not want to walk back to the car.

Scouts need to be in full UNIFORM, shirt, neckerchief and blue pants (or khaki for Webelos) and hat if they have one. If you have questions, please email us back.
